Composting

Garden Compost is an essential for any gardener looking to improve the quality of their soil. Worked regularly into the ground, a good compost will help the soil retain the essential air, nutrients and water needed for thriving plants. Doing your own composting is an environmentally-friendly way of getting your soil back on track, and it’s not difficult to do. It’s also a great way of making the most of your kitchen and garden waste.

Almost any vegetable waste can be composted, but never use meat or cooked foods as these attract vermin and don’t use thick layers of grass clippings as they inhibit air movement. Pruning clippings may be used, although woody stems should be shredded first and only ever compost young weeds. You want to avoid weeds with seeds as you could be storing up a weed re-growth problem when you lay down your new compost.

Garden Direct can also give your composting a boost with our compost accelerator that speeds up the natural process, creating a homemade compost that will make a real difference to the quality of your soil.
